Matt Cutts recently released a video detailing what we can expect from Google in the coming months. Topics included cluster results in search, hacked sites, payday loan searches, a Panda update and, reading between the lines, most importantly a new version of the webspam update Penguin.
What is Penguin? The Penguin algorithm targets the following –
- Keyword stuffing – Using keywords more than you should. Simply, if it doesn’t read well, you’ve stuffed the copy. This might have worked in the past, now it will lead to your site being penalised – However tempting, do not keyword stuff.
- Anchor text – Using the same keyword for all of your backlinks is now an issue. You need to vary the anchor text people are using in linking back to your site.
- Duplicate content – Possibly the easiest rule to follow and perhaps also to break. It doesn’t matter how pushed you are for time, do not plagiarise content from another site. It’s bad karma and it’s very bad in the eyes of Google too.
- Cloaking – A now pretty useless SEO technique that delivers different content to a search engine and a human user. Cloaking is used to try and deceive the search engine into ranking the particular page higher. If you suspect your SEO company have done this / are doing this, raise the alarm – this is bad practise.
If you or your current SEO company are employing any of the above, you will almost certainly come under the scrutiny of the new Google Penguin 2.0.
Matt Cutts says in the video (and this is NOT the first time he has mentioned this!!!) Google are looking for sites with high quality content, site owners that are working for users (not search engines) offering compelling and original sites that users will come back to.
These sites will be rewarded with higher rankings….it’s as simple as that.
Google Penguin 2.0 will again focus on blackhat webspam. It is said to be more comprehensive and will go deeper than the previous Penguin. If Penguin 1.0 didn’t get you, but you are doing the above on site, you should be concerned.
