If you find yourself in a hospital in Belgium (specifically in Ostend or Liege) you may well be greeted by a robot receptionist called Pepper. Two robots have recently been deployed to help greet visitors and to provide useful information. With the ability to understand 20 different languages, and detect whether it is speaking to a man, woman or child, there isn’t much that is going to stop it in its tracks!
A very cool gimmick for the hospitals, but also an ability to save an incredible amount of staff time that can then be diverted elsewhere.
And they’re not just confined to the reception area, one of the robots even has the ability to lead you to the department you are trying to find: an absolute godsend given how difficult it can be at times to navigate your way around an unfamiliar hospital!
At a relatively low cost of just €30,000 each, we wonder how long it will be before we start seeing these in hospitals in the UK.
